As a 36-year-old dad pursuing psychology at WGU, it's been a rollercoaster! Here's the breakdown:
Western Governors University (WGU) was a great fit for this student as a working parent. The flexible, competency-based learning allowed them to study around their busy schedule. Additionally, the affordable tuition helped manage family finances. However, the online format lacked the sense of community found on a traditional campus. The student suggests WGU could improve by offering virtual connection opportunities and career resources tailored to psychology careers. While asynchronous communication with professors worked well, the student occasionally missed live discussions.
Overall, WGU has been a fantastic fit for my unique situation. It allowed me to pursue my passion for psychology while still being a present dad. With some tweaks to build a stronger online community and career support system, it could be an even more well-rounded experience for non-traditional students like me.

My experience at WGU is second to none. I was a bit of a rolling stone as a young adult and attended 5 different colleges before I found something I could really commit to. I completed my Associates degree at Tacoma Community College (my 6th college), and have transferred to WGU for my bachelor's degree. The structure of this school is conducive to being an adult student and/or neurodivergent, plus I've actually enjoyed the conversations I have had with professors and other college staff. Truly a great experience!

Western Governors University (WGU) was ideal for me. I recently found out that I have a learning disability and the flexibility at WGU really worked for my brain. I absolutely loved that they are competency based as I was able to learn in the ways that I needed best and wasn't set up to fail like in a traditional university setting - or so it felt. I also loved that I had the option to accelerate my degree. I attended WGU for both my bachelor's and master's degrees. I wanted to challenge myself and finish my master's program in six months due to our financial situation at the time. I did it! I worked a full time job, came home and did school in the morning and evening, but I did it. I was so proud and the savings at WGU is uncomparable. If they offered a master's for counseling and/or therapy I would go back again in a heartbeat as that is my next step plan. I really hope they consider this option in the future!
