5. TRUSUA DETROIT FREE AUGUST 17, 1990 LOCAL NEWS Embattled precinct chief, Hart to talk BY JIM SCHAEFER Free Press Staff Writer Charles Jackson said he will have a meeting today with Police Chief William Hart where he expects to be told whether he will remain as commander of the 2nd (Schaefer) Precinct. He vowed to fight if the chief tells him he has been demoted. Jackson said he handed a letter to Hart on Thursday that said, under state statute, Hart must give him a reason why he would be demoted. "I don't run from a fight," Jackson said.
"I'm not going to quit. You don't walk away from a job like this without finding a reason for it." On July 27, Hart ordered Jackson to take a demotion to lieutenant or resign by Aug. 16, said Amos Williams, Jackson's attorney. The same ultimatum was given to Commander Crear Mitchell of the 9th (Gratiot) Precinct, Jackson said. Mitchell could not be reached for comment.
Hart denied the orders exist. Jackson said he desk, but Williams recourse in court demoted against ployment terrorism." Associated Press Jaz Young, center, meets Dan Quayle and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bill Schuette on Thursday in a store near Ann Arbor. Quayle drops by to praise Schuette, raise some cash BY MARYANNE GEORGE AND DORI J. MAYNARD Free Press Staff Writers Vice President Dan Quayle, came to Michigan on Thursday to say a few positive words about U.S. Rep.
Bill Schuette, but had to hear some negative words from demonstrators along the way. Quayle flew into Metro Airport shortly before 5 p.m. and flew out about 7:30 p.m. His visit was a quick campaign stop for Schuette, the 36- year Sanford lawyer who hopes to unseat Democratic Sen. Carl Levin.
Before attending a fund-raiser at the Ann Arbor home of David Laro, a former University of Michigan regent, Quayle and his entourage ran a gauntlet of about 30 demonstrators. Among them was Raymond Mullins, an Ypsilanti lawyer and president of the Ypsilanti -Willow Run Branch of the NAACP. Mullins carried a petition signed by several prominent Washtenaw County lawyers asking Quayle to beseech his boss to sign the Civil Rights Act of 1990. Citing his opposition to quotas, President George Bush has threatened to veto the bill, which would restore many minority workplace righte erased by recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions.
When 1 the Secret Service refused to let Mullins deliver the petition, he said he would mail it to the White House. Other protesters carried placards and chanted slogans on behalf of gay rights and against U.S. involvement in El Salvador. Quayle's visit was said to have drawn 100 people at $500 apiece at the home of Laro, chief executive officer of Durakon Industries. At an airport news conference, Quayle rallied the troops for Schuette.
"Carl Levin is a senator who needs to be replaced by Bill Schuette. Bill Schuette will be a very good one," Quayle said. Quayle said he agrees with the Bush administration's insistence that Americans trapped i in Kuwait and Iraq are not hostages, but On the way to Ann Arbor, Quayle and Schuette stopped at a Pittsfield Township Krogers store, where they bought doughnuts, kissed babies and made small talk. It was Quayle's second visit on behalf of Michigan Republicans this summer. Bush also is expected to visit on Schuette's behalf.
Pharmacist, 39, killed in Rochester Hills BY WYLIE GERDES Free Press Staff Writer Rochester Hills pharmacist Michael Dando, 39, was slain Thursday in what police believe was a robbery at his prescriptions-only pharmacy in a medical office building on Livernois Road near Walton Boulevard. Police sought a man seen leaving the area after the attack. Dando died around 1:20 p.m. at nearby Crittenton Hospital after he was found lying bloodied in a parking lot outside his pharmacy an hour earlier. He had been stabbed repeatedly.
Investigators said there were no obvious signs of a struggle in the pharmacy, Also being sought is a mid-1980s where Dando maroon Pontiac Phoenix or Chevrolet was working Citation, a possible escape vehicle. alone. Board pulls back on sergeant's pension BY ROGER CHESLEY Free Press Staff Writer A retirement board Thursday voted for reconsideration of disability payments, which some members likened to a "golden parachute," to a dismissed Detroit police sergeant. The Policemen and Firemen Retirement System board of trustees nullified its Aug.
9 decision to grant former narcotics Sgt. Ronald Ferguson $29,247 tax-free annually for the next five years. The board voted 6-4, with one abstention, to send the case to a three-, member medical board of review, whose decision is binding on whether Ferguson should receive disability payments totaling two-thirds of his former salary. Trustee and police Inspector John Clark, the dissenter in the 5-1 vote Aug. 9, said he found it troubling that there seemed to be a "golden parachute" mentality in which disability claims by officers often arose "subse- Death Notices ARNOLD GRACE J.
